In-custody death at Sarpy County jail prompts investigation
Papillion, Nebraska – An investigation into an in-custody death is currently underway after an inmate was discovered unresponsive in his cell at the Sarpy County jail on Thursday evening.
The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office has stated that both deputies and the Papillion Fire Department staff responded to an emergency rescue alert at approximately 9:48 p.m.
Efforts to resuscitate Mr. Huan Pham, a 43-year-old resident of Gretna, through CPR were regrettably unsuccessful, leading to the pronouncement of his death.
In response to this incident, the Sarpy County Force Investigation Team, Sarpy County Investigators, and the Douglas County Crime Lab have been mobilized to oversee a comprehensive in-custody death examination.
Available online records reveal that Mr. Pham was apprehended on November 29, 2022, for offenses related to speeding and operating a vehicle with a revoked license. After an initial release from jail, Mr. Pham did not attend a mandated hearing in January 2023. Consequently, he was later taken into custody, with an added charge of failure to appear.
