Sarpy County offices to close for Memorial Day
Papillion, Nebraska – Sarpy County offices will temporarily close on Monday, May 25, as the county joins communities across the nation in observing Memorial Day and honoring military members who lost their lives while serving the United States.
County officials announced that all regular administrative offices will be closed during the holiday. However, public safety services throughout Sarpy County will continue operating without interruption to ensure emergency response and public protection remain available.
Alongside the closure announcement, county leaders shared a message reflecting on the meaning and history of Memorial Day.
County Leaders Reflect on Meaning of Memorial Day
Sarpy County Board Chair Don Kelly issued a statement encouraging residents to remember the sacrifices made by fallen service members and to carry their example of service into everyday life.
“This weekend, as we pause to mourn and honor our fallen service men and women, we share our deep gratitude for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice,” Kelly said in the county’s Memorial Day message.
Officials also highlighted the historical roots of the national observance.
According to the county, Memorial Day was first observed in 1868 following the Civil War. During that first national remembrance event, thousands of people gathered at Arlington National Cemetery to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers.
County leaders noted that the patriotic act eventually inspired similar traditions throughout the country, helping establish Memorial Day as a national time of remembrance.
“Memorial Day was first observed in 1868 as a way to remember those who died in the Civil War,” Kelly said. “As part of that first national commemoration, thousands of participants helped decorate the graves of soldiers buried at Arlington National Cemetery. That patriotic act sparked similar acts of kindness across the country.”
More than 150 years later, officials say Memorial Day continues serving as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by members of the military throughout American history.
“Now, more than 150 years later, Memorial Day is a day to reflect on the sacrifices of America’s military heroes and those who gave their lives for our nation,” Kelly added.
County leaders also encouraged residents to remember the values of service and selflessness associated with those being honored during the holiday.
