Lincoln man with prior drug conviction sentenced to 130 months in federal prison for meth trafficking

Lincoln, Nebraska – A Lincoln man with a prior drug conviction will spend more than a decade in federal prison after authorities uncovered his role in distributing methamphetamine, along with troubling discoveries inside his home and vehicle.

United States Attorney Lesley A. Woods announced that Bernie Charles Campbell, 56, was sentenced on March 19, 2026, in federal court in Lincoln. Campbell had been convicted of conspiracy to distribute 50 grams or more of a methamphetamine mixture, and his prior serious felony drug trafficking conviction played a major role in the length of his sentence. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis ordered Campbell to serve 130 months in prison. Federal officials noted that there is no parole in the federal system. After completing his prison term, Campbell will also face an additional eight years of supervised release.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered Campbell to forfeit $4,840 in U.S. currency that had been seized from him and his residence during the investigation.

Investigation reveals drugs, cash, and explosive device

According to information provided to law enforcement, Campbell had been actively involved in distributing methamphetamine in the Lincoln area between June and August of 2024. As investigators gathered evidence, they obtained a search warrant for his residence on August 10, 2024.

Before officers executed that warrant, they observed Campbell leaving his home with a small child. Authorities followed him to the parking lot of a local restaurant, where he was detained while officers carried out the search of his residence.

During that encounter, investigators made a disturbing discovery inside Campbell’s vehicle. They found a homemade explosive device along with $1,300 in cash. The presence of both drugs and a dangerous device raised additional concerns about the situation.

At Campbell’s home, officers uncovered even more evidence. Inside a safe located in a bedroom shared by Campbell, the child, and the child’s mother, investigators found at least 200 grams of methamphetamine. The same room also contained marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and additional cash, painting a clear picture of ongoing drug activity inside the residence.

Authorities emphasized that the presence of drugs and related items in a shared living space involving a child added another layer of seriousness to the case.

Prior conviction and sentencing outcome

Campbell’s criminal history played a key role in the outcome of the case. Court records show that he had previously been convicted in Lancaster County, Nebraska, for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. In that earlier case, he was sentenced in 2009 to between six and twelve years in prison.

With that prior conviction in mind, federal prosecutors pursued enhanced penalties in the current case, ultimately leading to the 130-month sentence handed down in March 2026.

The investigation was carried out by the Lincoln and Lancaster County Drug Task Force, whose work led to the arrest and prosecution of Campbell. The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address drug distribution in the region and hold repeat offenders accountable.

As Campbell begins his prison term, the case stands as another example of how drug trafficking operations, especially those involving repeat offenders and dangerous circumstances, can result in significant federal penalties and long-term supervision after release.
