Bellevue Loop Trail to stay closed through May as crews uncover additional sewer damage

Bellevue, Nebraska – The City of Omaha has announced an extended closure of a key section of the Bellevue Loop Trail, pushing the reopening date to May 9, 2025. This is the second extension to the original timeline, which began on January 1, 2025, and was first scheduled to end by April 18.

The trail segment affected extends from the south entrance at Highway 370 to South 13th Street, including the Capehart Road trail entrances. The closure was initially prompted by a failed sewer manhole situated just south of Capehart Road. Significant structural repairs were required, including complete removal of the damaged manhole tied to the South Papio Interceptor Sewer system.

While crews were engaged in that work, they uncovered further issues: pipe damage and debris buildup inside the sewer line. These unexpected complications forced a revision of the schedule to accommodate the added scope of work. Additionally, the recent blizzard that swept through the region created further delays, impacting both labor and material delivery timelines.

“While the repairs were underway, additional pipe damage and obstructions were observed within the South Papio Interceptor Sewer, which required the schedule to be extended to April 18, 2025. In order to return the Sewer Interceptor to service safely, this latest extension of the trail closure became necessary upon further assessment of the damage, coordination of the repairs, and the additional delay caused by the recent blizzard,” reads the official April 2 update from the City of Omaha.

Safety Measures and Partial Access

The City emphasized that the closure is in place to ensure the safety of construction workers, pedestrians, and cyclists. Trail users will see “Trail Closed Ahead” signage and orange fencing blocking off active work areas. Other segments of the Bellevue Loop Trail outside the construction zone remain open for recreational use.

Capehart Road is expected to remain accessible throughout the project. While there will be no full lane closures, portions of the roadway may be used temporarily for materials staging and delivery.

Residents and trail users are reminded to avoid closed-off areas and to stay alert when navigating near construction zones.
