Sarpy County to host walk in passport application event this week to help residents apply in person
Papillion, Nebraska – For the first time, the Sarpy County Clerk’s Office will open its doors on a Saturday to assist residents who need to apply for a passport. County officials say the special event is designed to make passport services more accessible for people who have difficulty visiting the office during standard weekday hours.
The one-day passport event will take place on Saturday, March 14, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Sarpy County Clerk’s Office located at 1210 Golden Gate Drive in Papillion. During this time, county staff will process passport applications for walk-in applicants who must apply in person, including first-time applicants and children.
Officials noted that the event is specifically intended for individuals who are required to submit Form DS-11, the application used for new passport requests. The opportunity provides residents with an additional option to complete the process without needing to schedule a weekday appointment.
Sarpy County Clerk and Register of Deeds Amber Houghtaling said the Saturday opening was created to help residents who may have struggled to find time during normal business hours.
“This is a special opportunity for those who haven’t made it to our office during regular business hours,” said Sarpy County Clerk and Register of Deed Amber Houghtaling. “We’re excited to be your first destination as you plan your trip abroad.”
What Applicants Need to Bring
Residents planning to attend the passport event must arrive at the Papillion office and check in no later than 12 p.m. Officials emphasize that applicants should come prepared with all required documentation to avoid delays or incomplete applications.
Applicants must bring a completed DS-11 passport application form when they arrive. Adults and parents must also present a government-issued photo identification.
In addition, applicants must provide a birth certificate as proof of citizenship. If the name listed on the birth certificate does not match the name on the applicant’s photo identification, officials say a certified document showing the name change must be provided. This may include a certified copy of a marriage license or another court-certified record.
For payment, federal passport fees must be paid using a personal check, cashier’s check, or money order. County officials note that starter checks will not be accepted. Applicants must also bring a debit or credit card to pay the county’s processing fee of $35 and a passport photo fee of $20.
The Clerk’s Office also reminded residents that cash payments are not accepted for these services.
Expanding Passport Service Access
The Saturday event is part of a broader effort by Sarpy County officials to improve access to passport services. In November 2025, the Clerk’s Office introduced expanded hours on Wednesdays, allowing residents to begin submitting passport applications as early as 7 a.m.
Outside of special events, applicants can still schedule passport appointments during normal office hours throughout the week. However, officials remind residents that passport renewal services are not handled at the county clerk’s office.
Regular passport application hours at the Sarpy County Clerk’s Office are Monday through Friday, with offices typically opening at 8:15 a.m. On Wednesdays, the office opens earlier at 7 a.m. and continues serving applicants until 4 p.m.
County leaders encourage residents planning international travel to take advantage of the special Saturday event if they need to apply for a passport in person. Additional information about passport services and application requirements is available through the county’s website at sarpy.gov.
