Your mattress may be preventing you from deep and restful sleep – warning signs
When the bedroom is dark, cool, quiet and free of clutter, what else can keep you awake at night? If you have a good personal relationship and are doing well with your finances, the cause of your random thoughts may be due to an old mattress. “One of the simplest solutions to good sleep is a comfortable mattress,” notes The Sleep Foundation.
The signs of a bad mattress aren’t always obvious, so what should you look out for?
One of the visible signs is the sagging of the mattress, which leads to uneven support of the spine.
“Nearly all mattresses begin to sag over time as a result of carrying your body weight night after night,” adds the Sleep Foundation.
Poor sleep quality can affect your physical and mental health.

Waking up in the morning with aches and pains can speak volumes; this may indicate that the comfort layers within the mattress are being destroyed.
While a good night’s sleep should leave you feeling refreshed in the morning, a bad mattress will keep that from happening, no matter how many hours you’ve been sitting.
Other signs of a bad mattress can also lead to:
- Waking multiple times during the night
- Falling asleep takes longer than usual.
Worn out mattresses can pick up pet dander, mold, mildew, and other allergens over time.

If you’re prone to allergies, these could be signs of an allergic reaction that’s keeping you awake.
Allergy symptoms, according to the NHS, include:
- Sneezing and itching, runny or stuffy nose
- Itching, redness, tearing
- Wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and cough
- Raised, itchy, red rash
- Swollen lips, tongue, eyes, or face
- Abdominal pain, feeling unwell, vomiting or diarrhea
- Dry, red and cracked skin.
You may just be able to tell if your mattress is uncomfortable, and if so, it’s time for a new one.

Without a sufficient night’s sleep, the body is less able to repair damaged tissues and eliminate toxins.
The Sleep Foundation adds: “Research has linked poor sleep to problems with memory and concentration, a weakened immune system, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.”
For example, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease can shorten your life.
How long do mattresses last?
While a mattress can last up to 10 years, there are many factors that could mean you need to change it much sooner.
“The quality and materials of a mattress make a big difference in how it performs,” says The Sleep Foundation.
However, since a mattress tends to wear out over time, it can be difficult to notice the exact moment when its structure collapses.
People can get used to the feel of their mattress without realizing how bad the situation is.
However, if you are struggling to sleep and your mattress is either poor quality or old, this could be a problem.
