Wind and cold weather in Lincoln on Thursday
LINCOLN, Nebraska – On Thursday, the region will continue to be impacted by a storm system that is moving slowly and will be characterized by strong winds, freezing temperatures, and the possibility of seeing some snow.
The low pressure system that is moving across the northern Plains and into the Great Lakes region will continue to have a significant impact on our weather on Thursday and, to a lesser extent, even into Friday. Conditions that are primarily overcast and breezy will be evident across the 10-11 forecast area…with the region that has the greatest potential for accumulating snow being seen across areas of northern and northeastern Nebraska. It’s possible that snow showers or flurries will fall as far south as Lincoln or Beatrice, but we shouldn’t expect more than a “dusting” of the white stuff, and the majority of the state will receive considerably less than that.
Any regions that do receive snow, even light snow, will have their visibility hampered at times because winds from the northwest will range from 20 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts reaching 40 or 45 miles per hour. This will continue throughout the day. When traveling, please use caution if you come across snow that has been blown by the wind. The wind will continue to be rather gusty on Friday, and it will be partly cloudy to mainly cloudy, but the day should be dry, and peak temperatures will struggle to break into the teens and 20s. Temperatures in the 20s and 30s are forecasted to prevail throughout the upcoming weekend alongside dry weather.
In looking ahead to the week after next, it appears that an arctic outbreak will bring some of the coldest air of the season into our region. By the middle of the following week, there will also be some chances of snow returning to the local area. If you haven’t done so previously, now would be a good time to get out your bulkiest winter coats, as well as your winter hats and gloves; you never know when you might need them. Finally, make sure to keep up with the most recent weather forecasts.
