Walled Lake man killed his wife and injured his daughter before he was shot and killed by local deputies in Michigan
Walled Lake, Michigan – A man armed with a shotgun and believed to have been motivated to violence by his belief in QAnon conspiracy theories was shot and killed by police after he fatally shot his wife and injured their daughter in a suburban area of Detroit, according to statements made by officials on Monday.
A woman who is 25 years old contacted 911 at approximately 4:11 in the morning on Sunday and “said that she had just been shot by her father,” according to a statement released by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. The incident took place on Glenwood Drive in Walled Lake.
The man, later identified as Igor Lanis, 53, walked out of the front door of the home armed with a Remington 870 pump action shotgun and opened fire on the cops who had arrived at the residence, according to the sheriff’s office.
According to the statement made by the sheriff’s office on Monday, Lanis’ gunshots hit “a car an officer was behind and the residence behind him.” However, no one “was hurt from those shots.”
Officials said that a police officer from Walled Lake and a deputy from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office both returned fire, resulting in Lanis’s death.
Authorities stated that the person who called 911 was “at the front door…attempting to crawl out of the home” before to being “dragged to safety” by responding officers.
According to the sheriff’s office, the woman was transported to a hospital and immediately underwent emergency surgery. The sheriff’s office also added that the woman’s condition has been upgraded from critical to stable.
The man’s wife and the family dog were discovered to have died inside the residence by the authorities.
The sheriff’s office stated, without revealing the woman’s name, that the woman, who was 56 years old, had been “shot numerous times in the back, and it appears that she was also attempting to flee out of the front door.” The sheriff’s office did not disclose the woman’s name.
The deceased dog, a Great Pyrenees, had many bullet holes in its body as well.
On Monday, representatives from the sheriff’s department stated that it was still unclear what may have sparked the horrifying shooting spree.
According to a statement released by the sheriff’s office, “As part of this ongoing investigation, they are seeking insight into what set this into motion leading to a resident shooting and fatally wounding his wife, shooting and seriously injuring his daughter, and killing the family dog.” [Citation needed]
However, his other daughter, Rebecca Lanis, who was not injured on Sunday, told the Detroit News that her father suffered from mental health challenges, which she attributed to the fact that he picked up extremist ideologies and conspiracy theories online. Rebecca Lanis was not a victim of the shooting on Sunday.
According to what Lanis shared with the local media, “I think that he was always prone to (mental disorders), but it really dragged him down when he began reading all those crazy things on the internet.”
The daughter reported that her father deteriorated after Donald Trump was unsuccessful in his bid for the presidency in 2020, becoming more open to “crazy notions” online such as QAnon.
Rebecca Lanis told the News that she was the author of a statement that was posted on a subreddit page called “QAnonCasualties.” In the statement, she blamed her father’s problems on the false but widespread conspiracy theory about — amongst many other things — Trump leading a top-secret war on a cabal of pedophiles and criminals.
The daughter hurled curses against QAnon fans and claimed that she hoped “the FBI tightens its hold on you” so that these conspiracy theorists would one day “rot in prison (and hell) for poisoning so many people.”
On Monday, Sheriff Michael Bouchard expressed his gratitude to the dispatchers, police, and deputies for their efficient job.
In a statement, Bouchard described the incident as “an unbelievable act of heinousness.” “It is so tragic on so many different levels, but at least one victim was saved thanks to the quick response and professional conduct of our dispatch, the police of Walled Lake, and the deputies of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office,” she said. We shall make a concerted effort to gather information in order to acquire a better understanding of what set this in motion. This is a narrative that is still unfolding.
