Vaping can be ‘just as harmful’ as cigarettes, expert warns – 7 Health Problems

Ever since e-cigarettes were first introduced, there has been hope that they can be used as a healthy alternative to smoking. Many saw them as a tool to reduce the consumption of traditional cigarettes and a way to help quit smoking completely. But in recent years, various health authorities and experts have warned of their potential danger.

Mike Jones, medical and health writer for Smart Fitness Edge, spoke to Express.co.uk about some of the damage that vaping can cause.

He said: “Vaping may seem like a harmless alternative to cigarettes, but it can be just as bad for your health. It is important to take steps to quit smoking if you already smoke.

“Consider methods such as replacing nicotine with something else or scheduling a reduction in vaping products.

“Seek professional help if needed.

“Many people choose to smoke to cope with stress and anxiety. However, over time, cigarettes can be dangerous and even deadly.

“Vaping is becoming increasingly popular due to its perceived safety compared to cigarettes. However, there are still hidden dangers that people may not be aware of.

“It’s important to learn about the potential health risks associated with vaping so you can make an informed choice if you choose to vape.”

He shared seven health risks that can be associated with vaping.

popcorn lung disease

“The chemical diacetyl in some vape juices has been linked to a rare lung disease called popcorn disease (bronchiollitis obliterans),” he said.

“Symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, and chest tightness, which get worse over time if left unchecked.”

Cardiovascular damage

Mr. Jones said: “Studies show that regular vaping can harm the cardiovascular system, causing heart attacks, strokes or hypertension due to the effect of nicotine on blood pressure levels and vasoconstriction after smoking or vaping.”

Cancer risk

He commented: “Long-term exposure to some of the toxic chemicals found in vape juice can increase your risk of cancer, including mouth cancer, tongue cancer, or throat cancer, depending on where they are when you inhale these substances into your body.” .

Lung damage

“Vaping involves inhaling chemical fumes that can cause inflammation and damage the lungs,” he said.

“In particular, vaping has been associated with an increase in the incidence of bronchitis, asthma and other respiratory diseases.”

Nicotine addiction

Mr Jones said: “Many vape juices contain nicotine, a highly addictive drug known for its adverse health effects.

“Regular vaping use can lead to addiction and long-term health problems associated with nicotine use.”

Exposure to toxic chemicals

“Many e-juices contain chemicals such as diacetyl, formaldehyde, and heavy metals that are potentially dangerous if inhaled regularly over a long period of time,” he explained.

“These toxins can lead to shortness of breath, skin irritation and other health problems.”

Throat irritation

He added: “Some vapers experience throat irritation due to the high temperatures used for vaping as well as the presence of certain ingredients in e-liquid.

“This can lead to bouts of coughing, sore throats and hoarseness in vapers.”
