Two New Downtown Projects Designed to Boost Omaha’s Economy
OMAHA, Nebraska (Nebraska) – The face of downtown Omaha is changing again. Thursday was an important day for the city as two new developments are ready to welcome tourists. One opened on Thursday; the other just broke the ground.
The new hotel on the corner of 13th Street and Farnham Street officially welcomes guests. Farnam, a 120-room hotel and restaurant, is inside the attraction and a few blocks from a new development that began earlier Thursday.
City officials say the hotel’s opening will be a big economic boost for Omaha, especially in the coming weeks.
“We are coming out of a pandemic and you know, we just found out that the CWS will be operating at full capacity; we are waiting for swimming trials in the USA. … There are many events going on,” Mayor Jean Stothert said. “We have the Senior Open approaching and our city core has always been in the spotlight.”
The City is hailing the Farnam Hotel and the Omaha Performing Arts The Steelhouse as signs of the city’s economic recovery.
Omaha Performing Arts announced that The Steelhouse Omaha, located between Dodge Street and Capitol Avenue from 11th to 12th Streets, will be a new live music venue. It is scheduled to open in 2023.
Wallace Todd Johnson, Senior Vice President of the Greater Omaha House for Economic Development, praised the progress.
“Two of these projects on the same day – not to mention the same week or month – and I think this is the main indicator of how we coped with this terrible pandemic that affected so many people, but we coped much better than the world, I dare say,” he said.
