The Lincoln Police Department’s Northeast Team settles into a new home
LINCOLN, Neb. (Nebraska) – The Lincoln Police Department’s Northeast Team has a new headquarters.
The team moved into its new headquarters on Friday, and officials said the building offers updated facilities that will boost department communication.
“We have TVs, monitors and everything we need to record and do interviews,” Officer Jeff Bucher said.
City officials say the 52nd and O Streets building was purchased for $2.5 million, using funds from the LPD budget and seized estate funds.
An additional $4.5 million in CARES Act funds were used to renovate the building.
LPD said their new home will help officers better serve the community with updated facilities.
Officers will also be able to stay safe in the event of an emergency with a newly added storm shelter to the building.
“With ample off-street parking, up-to-date amenities, a storm-tolerant shelter indoors that will protect our personnel and ensure continued operations regardless of the weather, and state-of-the-art technology for both our officers and communications staff “, Assistant Chief Brian Jackson said.
Bucher said communication with staff had previously struggled, but the building’s training room will address the issue.
“This is kind of the beating heart of the building right here, the report room and the break room. This is where 90 percent of the work is going to be done, right in this area,” Bucher said. “I had my doubts, but we’re all coming together and feeding each other.”
The old station located at 49th and Huntington Street was in need of more repairs.
“The building we were in was a rental building. The initial vision was maybe to trade those rents for other city opportunities in our department,” Jackson said. “That building was starting to age, it was going to need significant repairs and maintenance.”
