The Covid-19 pandemic will increase the number of short-sighted children

Berlin, January 2, 2022 (MIA) – German ophthalmologists expect that the number of short-sighted children will increase due to the Covid-19 pandemic, because instead of being outdoors, they spend more time at home in front of the screens of mobile phones and tablets.

“The pandemic can be expected to increase myopia among children because they look too far into the screens of mobile phones and tablets at a short distance,” Lager Walling, a spokesman for the Association of Professional Ophthalmologists, told DPA.

He noted that “there is still no data on that, but previous research suggests that the number of children with myopia will increase.”

“Daylight is an important factor in preventing myopia in children,” Walling said.

According to him, even low daylight is better than artificial.
