Chinese scientists have discovered a new strain of the corona and warn of the danger to its biological safety. The new strain can be transmitted from animals to humans, and so far antibodies against coyote have proved useless in the fight against it.
Scientists, most of them from Wuhan University, have unexpectedly discovered that NeoKoV in South Africa and its close relative PDF-2180-KoV can effectively use some enzymes in bats and thus transfer them to humans.
One of the enzymes, ACE2, is part of the covidium virus that was discovered in Wuhan and caused the pandemic. According to the study, this new strain of coyote attacks bats, and antibodies obtained from previous strains do not help in the fight against the virus.
Chinese scientists acknowledge that the new strain is still unknown, but warn of possible consequences if it begins to be transmitted from person to person.
The WHO is wary of the issue and expects more research on whether the virus has a pandemic effect. They are grateful that Chinese scientists shared their findings with them in a timely manner.
“Animals, especially wildlife, are the source of more than 75 percent of all new infectious diseases in humans, many of which are caused by new viruses.” “Coronaviruses are often found in wildlife, especially bats, which are a natural reservoir for such viruses,” the WHO said in a statement.
