Terrifying footage from Tonga – the eruption of the underwater volcano caused a tsunami that brings everything in front of it
The Pacific state of Tonga was hit by a tsunami after a volcanic eruption at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
The footage posted on social media shows huge waves hitting the shore and people trying to escape the floodwaters.
Some Tongan residents were caught in the tsunami while attending a church service where they were trapped.
Waves about 1.5 meters high were recorded in the waters of the Pacific Ocean near Apia, the capital of Samoa, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
The Tonga Meteorological Service said a tsunami alert was in place throughout the island.
Tsunami warnings were also issued by the New Zealand National Emergency Service and the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
