Study conducted by eminent professor shows how one specific Covid strain directly infects fat
In addition, they found genetic material encoding SARS-CoV-2 in adipose tissue from various locations of the bodies of eight individuals who had died with COVID-19.
In two instances involving deceased Covid patients, researchers observed infiltration of inflammatory immune cells alongside contaminated fat cells in the epicardial fat.
Professor Tracey McLaughlin, co-senior author, stated, “This was of tremendous worry to us, given there is no physical barrier between epicardial fat and heart muscle.
“Therefore, any infection there may harm the heart muscle or coronary arteries directly.”
