Student Teacher Accused of Sexually Assaulting Kearny High School Student
KIRNEY, Nebraska. (Nebraska) — A student teacher is in jail after the Kearney Police Department received a report of possible sexual assault against a Kearney High School student.
In a press release, Kearney police said that 23-year-old KeySean VanDyke, Kearney, was arrested for first-degree sexual assault. Police said that Kearney Public Schools reported on March 11 a possible sexual relationship between VanDyke and a teenage student at Kearney High School. Court records show that VanDyke was arrested on Tuesday without incident.
Police said the incident did not occur on school grounds or during school hours.
A Buffalo County judge sealed an affidavit with more details about the attack, but indictment documents indicate that VanDyke was charged with having sex on March 5 with a 15-year-old student. VanDyke is currently in the Buffalo County Jail on $20,000 bail and is scheduled to have a probable cause hearing next month.
VanDyke was listed as the redshirt senior linebacker on the 2022 University of Nebraska-Kearney football roster. The registry document states that VanDyke was from Florissant, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis.
On Wednesday morning, Kearny Public Schools Superintendent Jason Mandorf released a statement to this effect:
“KPS was contacted through our student messaging system that a KHS student had a recent sexual encounter with a student teacher. KPS officers immediately referred the matter to local law enforcement agencies.
It is unfortunate that this event happened. The safety of our students is critical and we appreciate the notification system that has kept us informed of this situation. In addition, we appreciate the prompt response and thorough investigation by the Kearney Police Department.”
