‘Smell in stomach’ leads to horrific discovery in donation basket – hasn’t been touched in years

On Saturday, police in Kershaw County, South Carolina, found the remains of a dead woman in a clothing donation bin.

According to Kershaw County Coroner David West, authorities found a “virtually mummified” corpse between the Lugoff Toyota and the Camden West Inn around 8:45 a.m. that same day. WIS reported.

“The donation basket has probably not been emptied for many years,” West said.

At first, investigators thought it was the body of a man who took shelter from the cold.

However, the body was too decomposed for that, and officials believed the body had been there for at least several months, West said.

Although officials believe it is a woman’s body, they were unable to state the age or manner of death of the deceased.

“We are taking every precaution,” Kershaw County Sheriff Lee Boan said. WATCH reported.

“The SLED unit at the crime scene handled the scene in the same way as they would in a murder investigation,” Boan added.

“Unfortunately, it looks like the body may have been there for several months. It was badly decomposed and was basically a skeleton,” the sheriff said.

In a statement to reporters, Boan said: “I can assure you that your KCSO and coroner’s office investigators are carefully looking into this suspicious death,” WIS said.

“We will learn more facts as the investigation progresses. It’s very early in the investigation. We are not ruling out anything at this time,” Boan said in a statement.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

Authorities recovered the body after a man walking past a donation box reported a “stomach odor,” the Post reported.
