Shirley MacLaine’s approach to life allows her to live well into old age.
Icon Shirley MacLaine has two upcoming projects proving there’s still a lot of life left at her 88, but what are her vitality tips? “I eat what I want [and] I sleep when I want,” Shirley said in a previous interview, back in 2019. She was 85 years old at the time and it looks like her lifestyle has served her well as Shirley turns 89 this year on April 24th.
In Candid Conversation with People Conditions of Endearment (1984), the Oscar winner showed her calm and relaxed demeanor.
“It doesn’t bother me much,” she admitted. “I think relationships are a choice. Anger is a choice, peace is a choice, sarcasm is what I’m good at – it’s a choice.”
By releasing stressful emotions, Shirley could protect herself from disease.
Stress, after all, can contribute to numerous diseases, says the Mayp Clinic, including:
- High blood pressure
- heart disease
- Obesity
- Diabetes.

Excessive stress can have physical and emotional consequences that can affect a person’s behavior.
Stress, for example, can lead to:
- Headache
- muscle tension
- Chest pain
- Fatigue
- Changes in sex drive
- Stomach upset
- Sleep problems.
Stress can affect a person’s mood, making them feel more restless or restless.
Without adequate stress management, a person can suffer from anxiety, irritability, and depression.

“If you have symptoms of stress, taking steps to manage your stress can have many health benefits,” adds the Mayo Clinic.
Stress management techniques may include:
- Exercise
- Deep breathing
- Meditation
- Yoga
- tai chi
- Massage
- Humor
- Communication
- Hobbies.
The Mayo Clinic warns that “inactive” distractions from stress can be bad for you.
It notes: “Watching TV, surfing the Internet, or playing video games may seem relaxing, but in the long run, they can increase your stress.”

The Mayo Clinic adds: “And be sure to get enough sleep and eat a healthy, balanced diet.
“Avoid tobacco use, excess caffeine and alcohol, and illegal substances.”
In another interview with Variety, Shirley admitted that she “didn’t communicate Hollywood style.”
Since Hollywood parties are associated with depravity, it is possible that Shirley did not engage in unhealthy behavior that could have shortened her life.
Instead, the actress preferred to travel to see different parts of the world.
According to Dr. Howard Friedman of the University of California, travel is associated with longevity.
“Travel can foster that sense of curiosity and perseverance in learning and creating new things…these qualities are conducive to longevity,” Dr. Friedman said.
