Scientists have proven that exotic fruit juice has an anti-cancer effect in lung cancer

A study conducted by scientists from Okayama University found that sarunasi (actinidia arguta) juice contains the beneficial component isoquercetin. Actinidia arguta, also known as the hardy kiwi, is an edible fruit that can be juiced. Dr. Sakae Arimoto Kobayashi, Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, commented on his study of cancer in a mouse model.

“In this study, we aimed to investigate the chemoprophylactic effects of arguta actinide juice and its constituent isoQ. [isoquercetin].”

For a research project, mice were given a known carcinogenic compound found in tobacco products.

Mice injected with NNK, a cancer-causing compound, along with hardy kiwi juice developed “significantly” fewer tumors than mice given only NNK injections.

Kiwi fruit juice consumption has been found to reduce the number of nodules found in the lungs of mice.

The polyphenol- and vitamin-C-rich juice was shown to reduce “mutagenesis, inflammation, and tumorigenesis in the skin of mice.” [the development of tumours]”.

These results, while “promising”, may not be applicable to humans, meaning more research is needed.

Lungs’ cancer

The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation states, “Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer.”

Smokers and ex-smokers have an increased risk of developing tumors in the lungs.

Passive passive smoking can also increase the chance of a life-threatening disease.

Additional risk factors may include: lack of exercise; poor nutrition; diesel emissions; and exposure to asbestos, radon gas and other occupational chemicals.

“Early diagnosis of lung cancer can make a big difference,” the charity says in terms of survival prognosis.

Symptoms of lung cancer may include:

  • Persistent cough lasting three weeks or more.
  • Dyspnea
  • Repeated chest infections
  • Pain in the chest and/or shoulder
  • Loss of appetite and/or unexplained weight loss
  • Change in persistent cough or worsening cough
  • Hemoptysis
  • Unexplained fatigue or lack of energy
  • Hoarseness
  • clubbing
  • Blood clots.

The charity warns: “We don’t have a sense of pain inside our lungs, so it can be difficult to notice changes until they affect our breathing or begin to affect other parts of our chest or body.”

Anyone with any signs of lung cancer is advised to make an appointment with their doctor.

Testing for lung cancer may include scans, x-rays, blood tests, and biopsies.

When a tumor is found, the condition of the lung cancer will be determined based on its size and spread to other parts of the body.

Stage 1 lung cancer

The cancer is small and has not spread (localized).

Lung cancer of the second or third stage

The cancer is larger and can spread to surrounding tissues. There may be cancer cells in the lymph nodes (locally advanced).

Stage 4 lung cancer

The cancer has spread to another part of the body (secondary or metastatic cancer).

The results of Dr. Sakae Arimoto Kobayashi’s study were published in the journal Genes and Environment.
