LINCOLN, Neb. (Nebraska) – A co-sponsor of the Nebraska Heartbeat Act now calls it too extreme, according to Fred Knapp with the Nebraska Public Media.

He reports that Senator Merv Riepe has introduced an amendment that would allow abortions for up to 12 weeks.

Senator Joni Albrecht believes this sudden change of heart could doom her measure, according to the report.

Legislative Bill 626 would ban abortion after an ultrasound can detect a heartbeat, which occurs around six weeks of gestation.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 85 percent of abortions in Nebraska occur after six weeks.

Abortion rights advocates told Channel 8 that access to the procedure is a basic right that everyone should have.
