Pottawattamie County announced a $3.5 million acquisition of the Mt. Crescent Ski Area just across the river from Omaha

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – For the time being, Pottawattamie County will continue to operate a snow skiing business.

At the beginning of the year 2022, Iowa County made public their intention to pay $3.5 million to purchase the Mt. Crescent Ski Area, which is located directly over the river from Omaha.

When they used $2 million dollars worth of funding from the American Rescue Plan Act in an effort to recapture tourism revenue that was lost during COVID, eyebrows were raised.

However, they weren’t only buying the ski resort; they also bought the land that the resort is situated on.

“It’s important because it is located in the globally significant Loess Hills,” said Mark Shoemaker, the Executive Director of Pottawattamie Conservation. “It’s important because it is located in the Loess Hills.” We weren’t really thinking that we’d be running a ski area, but that’s just kind of what we have to do at this point in time and it’s going to be a great adventure for us. It’s immediately adjacent to Hitchcock Nature Center, so we will be adding trails and other things to connect to Mt. Crescent. “It’s immediately adjacent to Hitchcock Nature Center,”
