Plans for the “beautiful” skyscraper in downtown Lincoln have some worried

LINCOLN, Neb. (Nebraska) – A new development in the Haymarket is raising some concerns among local business owners.

The developers of Lincoln Bold aim to bring some luxury to the Haymarket area.

“This 22-story building is going to be a beautiful glass building,” said developer Steve Glenn. “Perhaps the coolest building between Chicago and Denver.”

The development will be built on the Melichar site at Ninth and P Streets, where there is now a service station.

It will have 33 condominiums, 77 luxury apartments, four floors of retail space and a private club.

The developers say they are currently working with the city on the final elements of the development process.

They hope to start construction by August. They say it could take two to three years to finish.

“Right now we are in discussions to fill all the space on the commercial sites, as well as begin selling condo units in the coming months,” Glenn said.

But many business owners in the Haymarket area are expressing concern about the project.

“It’s going up an eighth of a block, which means their entire rest area has to go to the street, and that’s going to severely impede access to our businesses and parking,” said Matt Taylor, a local business owner.

Haymarket developers say they fear the two to three years of construction will negatively impact the downtown economy.

“I’m not against the Lincoln Bold project; I’m against where they’re trying to place it,” Taylor said. “I’m for the project, I love Lincoln, I want Lincoln to grow. However, where they’re placing it doesn’t make sense.

A group called Save the Historic Haymarket has an online petition opposing the development plan.
