Patients with B12 deficiency notice the same symptom in the upper body “at night”.
The body relies on B12 to maintain healthy nerve cells and produce DNA, the body’s genetic material. While B12 deficiency is not usually a serious condition, it can become one if left untreated for too long. In one report, several patients who suffered from profuse night sweats for years were found to be deficient in one common vitamin: B12.
According to the Advisory Board for Cancer Therapy, clinical manifestations can be divided into several stages.
At the first stage, the level of vitamin B12 in the blood simply decreases.
Stage 2 describes “low cellular vitamin B12 concentration and metabolic abnormalities” and explains the health of the body.
In the next phase, the levels of homocysteine and MMA begin to increase, and DNA synthesis decreases, which leads to the onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms.

The final phase is characterized by macrocytic anemia, a blood disorder in which the bone marrow produces abnormally large red blood cells.
According to a 2022 report published by the National Library of Medicine, the manifestations of macrocytic anemia depend on the cause.
Vitamin B12 patients often complain of mood disorders and neurological problems affecting memory, balance, and other sensory symptoms.
Dr. Justine Butler, Head of Research at Viva!, said: “Deficiency can cause severe problems and symptoms, including extreme fatigue, tingling, muscle weakness, depression and cognitive problems.”
In 2015, the European Journal of General Medicine reported four cases of vitamin B12 deficient patients “who had torrential night sweats and fatigue.”
The first case was in a 57-year-old man referred for evaluation of a three to four year history of “drenching night sweats” needing to change sheets almost every night.
“The sweating only affected his upper body from the top of his head to the middle of his chest around the level of his nipples and seemed to increase after drinking alcohol,” the authors note.

After treatment with vitamin B12 supplements, the patient reported a severe reaction to sweating.
In a similar case, a 74-year-old woman reported episodic sweating for 10 years, which also required frequent changes of clothes and sheets.
Her vitamin B12 was diagnosed based on her elevated homocysteine levels, and she also saw improvements with monthly B12 injections.
The third case involved a 43-year-old man who had night sweats that primarily “affected his head and face” for four months.
Although hyperhidrosis is a less widely discussed side effect of this condition, it accompanies small fiber neuropathy.
The report explains that changes in the peripheral autonomic nervous system may be among the earliest manifestations of small fiber neuropathy.
How to Avoid Vitamin B12 Deficiency
People traditionally get vitamin B12 from […] farm animals that received B12 from water and unwashed food. Now that so many animals are kept on factory farms and fed with animal feed rather than grazing, many farm animals are now getting B12 supplements, according to Dr. Butler.
Those who choose to eliminate animal products from their diet may benefit from taking supplements under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional.
