Omaha street was closed Thursday afternoon due to a natural gas leak after line interrupted by construction

OMAHA, Nebraska – Thursday afternoon, a construction crew punctured a natural gas pipe beneath Leavenworth Street, resulting in the closure of a portion of the street.

Omaha Fire stated that workmen were digging into the roadway near the intersection of 38th and Leavenworth streets to install a line, but instead hit a three-inch high-pressure natural gas line.

Businesses in the area were evacuated until the air could be tested to ensure the absence of natural gas. Additionally, M.U.D. was summoned to turn off the gas.

Crews will need to demolish the street in order to repair it.
