Omaha officially ended up 2021 with less homicides within the city area compared to the year before, report

Omaha, NE – Omaha seems to be among the few places where a decreasing trend of homicides is recorded in 2021.

According to the statistics, the number of homicides within the city limits during 2021 is 32, which is less compared to 2020 when 37 homicides were reported on the city.

Although is good to see a decreasing trend in homicides, the number of homicides in 2021 still remains higher compared to the four years before killings spiked in 2020.

Todd Schmaderer, Omaha Police Chief, is looking forward this number to go even lower and reach the 2018 and 2019 when only 22 and 23 homicides respectively were added in the statistics. Those two years have been the best years in the last 14 years in terms of number of killings across the city.

Another concerning factor for this relatively high number of homicides in Omaha is the fact that in 2021 ten of the victims were teenagers which is high increase in this category of victims.

Police Capt. Steve Cerveny said the level of gang activity in the city is also worrisome.
