Omaha hosts the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee

OMAHA, Nebraska (Nebraska) — For the second year in a row, the Omaha Athletic Commission hosted some of the country’s most elite spelling bee.

Saturday’s event was a regional competition with competitors vying for a chance to compete in a national competition later this year. Approximately 70 students participating in the competition had to first qualify either through the school district or at the district level.

“You train for this; you are competing for it. You’re trying to make yourself available to the local, regional scene,” said Landsay Toussaint, executive director of the Omaha Athletic Commission. “It’s all about camaraderie and fun.”

Qualifiers for the event will travel to the national competition, which will be held in Washington, D.C. on May 30th.
