Authorities report one fatality and three injuries following an incident involving multiple automobiles in Western Springs on Thursday afternoon.
According to police, the collision occurred on Ogden near Gilbert Avenue at approximately 4:15 p.m.
At least six automobiles were involved in the horrifying incident, which was caught by NBC’s Sky 5 aircraft. Several automobiles were severely damaged in the collision.
As of Thursday night, the driver, who was pronounced deceased at the site, has not been named. Three others were reportedly sent to surrounding hospitals, two in critical condition and one in stable condition. The crash’s cause is still being investigated.
Andy Hoskins, a neighbor, described Ogden Avenue as a four-lane thoroughfare. I have no idea how they might be moving quickly enough to accomplish this.
Hoskins resides directly across the street from Northeast Park, within steps from the collision site.
“I guess the guy in the white van or someone in the white van was on fire and someone put it out with a fire extinguisher, and then there were a variety of fire trucks and ambulances,” he said.
Police issued a warning to motorists to avoid the intersection of Ogden and Gilbert Avenues as they investigate the cause of the fatal collision.
“The man who came to our house with his great grandson in need of a restroom stated his grandson was driving a pickup truck when someone trying to pass him hit the back of the truck and spun him around,” he explained.
Neighbors characterized Ogden Avenue as a bustling thoroughfare with motorists using it to get I-294 or Nazareth Academy. They informed NBC 5 off-camera and on-camera that the speed limit is only 35 miles per hour, but that not all drivers observe it.
“This is a very weird and mysterious occurrence,” he remarked. “I’m just curious how fast someone must be traveling to create that much damage.”
