Mount Pleasant residents will be updated on emergency preparedness

MOUNT PLEASANT, South Carolina – Based on the most recent estimates for Hurricane Ian, the mayor of Mount Pleasant stated that the city will immediately implement its maximum level of emergency readiness.

During a Thursday afternoon briefing, Mayor Will Haynie stated, “Our preparations have been ongoing for some time, but with the current forecast, we’re moving to a new level of preparedness.”

This forecast predicts that Ian, which came from the eastern side of the Florida peninsula as a tropical storm, will regain hurricane strength before making landfall. The whole coast of South Carolina is under a hurricane watch.

“The predicted path of Hurricane Ian has continued to shift slightly to the east and north, placing Mount Pleasant at a high risk for hurricane-force winds and potentially hazardous floods due to storm surge, heavy rain, and high tides,” he said.

Friday’s high tide is anticipated to be 8.7 feet at 10:40 a.m., according to Haynie.

“The storm surge’s height is now anticipated to be between four and seven feet. On top of that, we could receive four to eight inches of precipitation, with 12 inches probable in certain regions,” he stated. “We are aware that there is a substantial chance of floods and must plan accordingly.”

Haynie stated that if they have not already, now is the time to prepare for Ian.

“Throughout this entire episode, my attitude has been, ‘There is no drawback to overpreparing. “There is great danger in underpreparing or venturing out when it is not necessary,” he remarked. “Our first responders are performing admirably. In a circumstance like this, we don’t want to make them work more than required or put their lives at greater risk than necessary.”

He stated that emergency personnel and equipment have been stationed in three schools in three zones across the city for speedy reaction.
