Malone Community Center Celebrates Black History

LINCOLN, Nebraska (Nebraska) — The Malone Community Center celebrated Black history at its annual event Sunday afternoon. It started at 13:00 and drew a crowd that filled the gym hall.

Visitors walked through rows of stalls and art installations and listened to live music.

The stands focused on black history, focusing on black contributions to world events beyond what is usually discussed.

“It is important for our youth to understand that their heroes are not just actors, singers and athletes,” said Ishma Yousaf Valenti, Malone Community Center. “Their heroes were kings, scientists and great literary geniuses, and this is what we give to our youth during these events.”

Some tables offered free books for children with prominent black characters. The Malone Center also celebrated its second annual Millard T. Woods Community Service Award by offering awards to people who have done their best to support the community.
