LPD describes the active reaction of the shooter, training practices
LINCOLN, Nebraska (Nebraska) – Omaha police prompt response prevented a possible mass shooting Tuesday at a Target store.
The suspect, 32-year-old Joseph Jones, was shot dead on the spot.
Omaha Police have stated that it is their policy to dispatch an officer as quickly as possible in active threat situations.

“It’s scary to think when this happens so close to home, and this isn’t the first time this has happened in Nebraska or even in the Lincoln or Omaha subways,” said LPD officer P.J. Lansing. “We follow current trends. We train active fire response every year.”
The new strategy the LPD is working on is to send one officer as soon as possible rather than waiting for a whole team.
“The sooner we can prevent or introduce any use of force, the fewer lives will be lost,” Lansing said. “Statistics show that any intervention usually stops the loss of life.”
Recruits and police officers receive about 40 hours of training each year.
“These skills are perishable,” Lansing said. “It’s very similar to how I compare it to sports: if you don’t exercise regularly when it comes to a test or a game, you won’t do very well during that competition.”
But they said the community also plays a critical role in keeping each other safe.
“The only best way to prevent this is, as you know, community engagement in your community and keeping us informed so we can properly investigate something and hopefully put an end to it,” LPD investigator Scott Parker said.
The Lincoln Police said they are also monitoring trends in shooter types in these cases, they have also said they are ready for single or multiple shooters.
