Live longer: A drink that makes arteries ‘stretchable’ could reduce the risk of early death

Tea contains substances associated with lower levels of certain chronic diseases. Heavy drinkers who maintain a regular habit have a significantly lower risk of death from all causes, according to research conducted by the European Society of Cardiology.

The conclusion was based on data from a survey of more than 14,000 participants, showing that drinkers had a 39% lower risk of heart disease and stroke.

What’s more, the risk of fatal heart disease or stroke was 56% lower, and the risk of death from all causes was 29% lower compared to non-tea drinkers.

Green and black teas are among the best defenses against cardiovascular disease, but a 2020 study shows that each tea can work differently.

Due to the sample size, it was difficult to determine which types of tea had the most impact, but some noteworthy observations were made.

Science Daily explains: “Green tea is a rich source of polyphenols that protect against cardiovascular disease and its risk factors, including high blood pressure and dyslipidemia.

“Black tea is fully fermented, and during this process, polyphenols are oxidized into pigments and may lose their antioxidant properties.”

While there are widespread claims supporting the health benefits of both teas, preparation methods may also require careful attention.

Science Direct warns that preferred tea preparation methods can vary widely by population, with some more likely to add milk to their drink.

For example, black tea is often served with milk, which past research has shown can neutralize the health benefits of the tea.

How does tea affect arterial health?

In 2016, researchers at Kyoto University noted that the unique types of polyphenols found in green tea are capable of producing elastin.

The essential protein is responsible for giving arteries their “strong and resilient texture,” explains Science Daily.

One of the co-authors of the study, Hidetoshi Masumoto, noted: “The Japanese have the longest life expectancy in the world, and studies show that 80 percent of the population drink green tea daily.”

The researchers said that green tea consumption may play a role in preventing arterial rupture, but optimal doses remain to be determined.
