Lincoln native Sam Griesel lives out dream, beating Creighton

LINCOLN, Nebraska – The buzz that followed Nebraska Basketball’s stunning victory over Creighton on Sunday night is still audible throughout the state.

Sam Grisel, a native of Lincoln who spent his childhood cheering for the Huskers in this rivalry, is the one who is most aware of how significant a win this is for the team.

Griesel, who had previously only participated in this rivalry as a spectator, got his first opportunity to compete against Creighton on Sunday night.

Griesel finished the game with a double-double, scoring 18 points, dishing out seven assists, and grabbing 12 rebounds, all of which contributed to Nebraska’s victory over Creighton for the second time in 11 years.

Griesel said, “Just going back to players that I idolized who wore this jersey but didn’t get this win, especially in this arena.” “Just thinking back to players that I idolized who wore this jersey but didn’t get this win.” “Obviously, just walking around Lincoln, everyone is just like ‘beat Creighton this year, beat Creighton this year,'” said the player. “beat Creighton this year.” It is difficult to express in words. When I think about it, I can’t help but feel a little emotional simply because it holds a lot of significance for not only me, but also for this community and this state. This is a day that will stick with me for the rest of my life; I won’t forget it.

Fred Hoiberg, the head coach of the Nebraska basketball team, was asked about what motivates him. “What it’s all about for me,” he responded. “As the game comes to a close, I’m sitting here watching TV, and I look up to see Griesel hugging his parents. I mean, how awesome is that? To be able to come back and put a win of that kind on his record after having grown up in this environment and having it mean so much to him, it’s pretty dang fantastic that he was able to do it.

Griesel is the best scorer for the Huskers, averaging 11 points per game across the team’s first nine games. Even though he has only appeared in four of the nine games, Derrick Walker has a scoring average of 16.
