Less than 24 hours after escaping custody in Benton, Arkansas, the suspect wanted for Omaha shooting arrested

BENTON, Arkansas – An Omaha homicide suspect who was believed to have evaded capture over the weekend in Arkansas has been located and taken into jail.

According to officials with the Saline County Sheriff’s Office in Arkansas, Wuanya Smith, 20, who was wanted in connection to the shooting death of 20-year-old Anthony Collins III on August 12, had been arrested in Arkansas last week but escaped custody at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Anthony Collins III was shot and killed on August 12. According to the allegations, he scaled a barbed wire fence that encircled the jail institution.

A little under twenty-four hours later, the sheriff’s office announced on its Facebook account that Smith had been apprehended and was being held in custody.

According to the message, additional information was anticipated to be provided on Monday afternoon.


Wuanya Smith has been arrested.

A formal press release will be sent out this afternoon.
