January car crashes in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (Nebraska) – Traffic accidents in Nebraska were down in January of 2023 compared to last year.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation reports that eight people were killed in crashes on state roads last month, down 2 percent from 2022 figures of 26 fatalities in 23 crashes.

Four of the seven occupants killed in the vehicles were not wearing seat belts. No one used seat belts. Three of the occupants had seat belt use listed as unknown.

A fatal accident occurred on a local road; the other seven were on other state roads. Six of the eight occurred in rural areas, defined as a population of 5,000 or fewer.

One victim was a cyclist.
