Husker football players talk to children

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (Nebraska) – Normally you see them on Saturdays, but they visited elementary schools to talk to young people. Four Husker football players went to Grand Island elementary schools to point children into positive influences in their community.

Elliot Brown, Chubby Purdy, Dashon Singleton and the Chief Boarders encouraged kids to get good grades, find a mentor to help guide them, and also offered some tips on how to prevent bullying. For a Husker player this is all part of his dream.

“Since I grew up I’ve been a Huskers fan, my dad used to play and I’ve always remembered having interactions like this with Huskers players and it means everything to me,” Brown said. “So to be here now and give back to these guys like I’ve had there’s nothing more I can ask or imagine.”

The little ones were full of enthusiasm and questions for the players. A Husker even remembers when he was in their shoes.

“Whatever they said, I was amazed no matter what it was,” Brown said. “Just the fact that they were there, made my entire week. So if I can come here and interact with these guys and give them some insight, hopefully I can impact these guys for the next couple of weeks, months.”

Brown said he hopes kids have the same hopes and dreams he had when he was in grade school, but his goal for the day was simply to make a kid’s day.

“If I can just make a day out for kids and allow them to have some fun and laugh a little bit, then I’ve done my job,” Brown said. “I’m only here for this. I hope I can give them some words and some wisdom to really understand what we are saying. But hopefully if I can get them to laugh and giggle, I’ll be good at that too.

Brown said the kids mostly wanted to see them do the popular Louisiana dance, the Griddy, and hear the players tell jokes. He also hopes that the children have gained extensive knowledge from the topics they were talking about.
