How teachers and students at Omaha are reacting to ChatGPT artificial intelligence tool
OMAHA, Nebraska (Nebraska) – “The way I use it now is to speed up the brainstorming process or do chores that I don’t really consider necessary for myself, so I can use my brain power for more important things.” , said Jackson Zuerlein, a Creighton junior marketing and business intelligence student.
ChatGPT launched last November and students are already finding all sorts of ways to make learning easier.
“I used it to fix my Python code, so it helped a lot because I didn’t have to dig into it. He was able to tell me what was wrong with the code,” said Mika Navarro, Senior Accounting Specialist.
The software uses massive amounts of data and predictive technology to write essays, draft emails, or even create poetry.
“We used it for a class assignment, but that’s about it. I didn’t use it to turn in any assignments or anything like that,” said Megan Micklesh, a Creighton Junior student studying marketing and management.
About 13 million people use the site every day. Analysts estimate that ChatGPT attracted 100 million active users last month. According to investment banking group UBS, it is the fastest growing consumer app of all time. Because of its influence on scientists, educators are talking about how to move forward.
“We have several groups of people trying to figure out what our policy should be. And I am absolutely sure that they have a task on the table to find a tool that we can use if we want to detect and check if something is written by artificial intelligence,” said Dr. Guy McHendry, Director of Curriculum Magis Core Curriculum Creighton. .
However, Dr. McHendry says there might be room in the classroom for ChatGPT.
“Part of the ethic of learning to use it is to communicate that you are going to use this tool, which will be part of your end product,” McHendry said.
UN Senior Vice Chancellor Dr. Phil He said in a statement that the university plans to explore the opportunities and challenges the platform presents.
“While there will always be those who can use such technologies in a dishonest way, we are much more interested in the possibilities that they open up,” he said.
Omaha Public Schools, Nebraska’s largest school district, said they “couldn’t share anything specific about using ChatGPT as the software is still relatively new.”
As for what role advanced AI will play in academia in the future, some students want it to stay.
“I hope Creighton gets on the wave because it really takes over the world and I just hope we are part of it,” Zuerlein said.
“I think we need to learn to use it and not be so afraid of it, and embrace it instead of pushing it away,” Navarro said.
