How Lincoln Snowplow Contractors Are Paid
LINCOLN, Nebraska (Nebraska) – After an overnight snowstorm this week, snowplow companies contracted out of the city were activated in Lincoln for the first time in two years.
Five companies have contracts with the city: K2 Construction, Lee’s Lawn Maintenance, Nebraska Digging Services, Rutalkn Inc. and Vasa Construction.
Their contracts show that the city will call each company as needed, and the total amount of products and services they bill the city cannot exceed $467,500.
Contracting companies are paid by the city based on the number of lanes they drive and factors such as snow depth.
Contracts are concluded for one year with the possibility of extending the partnership with the city for another three years.
Each company is assigned to different neighborhoods throughout the city, with a total of approximately 340 miles assigned to each company.
In total, the city divided the snow removal areas into 70 different sections.
The companies have 12 to 30 hours after the city calls them to clear residential areas, depending on the amount of snow Lincoln receives.
For example, a storm like Thursday morning that brought over eight inches of snow would give these contract companies up to 30 hours to make two passes on residential roads.
There are also built-in bonuses for drivers if the city decides they will be working in difficult conditions or during a snow storm.
Contracting companies are not allowed to stop work on residential streets for any other snow removal work or reduce the number of trucks they have agreed to put in the area for non-city contract work.
When the work is completed, the contract specifies that an inspector from the city will come out to inspect the site and either approve it or ask the contracting company to come back and do it again.
