Google introduces new route option that will help you save fuel

Google has made public its intention to extend the availability of eco-route alternatives on Google Maps to a total of 40 additional nations located in Europe.

Eco-routes, which were originally made available to registered users in the United States a year ago, will provide you with the routes that are the most fuel-efficient rather than the routes that are the quickest. A leaf serves as a sign for the environmentally friendly path.

Tap your Google Maps profile picture, navigate to Options > Navigation Settings, and select Route Options to make adjustments to your Eco Route settings. After that, you will be prompted to decide whether to enable or disable the option to Prefer fuel-efficient routes.

The firm will also be releasing a new tool that will allow car owners to specify the engine type of their vehicle in order to obtain customised suggestions for more fuel-efficient routes that are best suited to the engine in question. Users will soon be able to head to the settings described above and select the sort of engine that they want to use for navigation. Users will be able to choose between gasoline, diesel, gas, hybrid, and electric vehicle (EV) options.

“The discoveries made at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the United States Department of Energy and the data collected by the European Environment Agency have made it possible for us to develop this technology. We were able to construct powerful machine learning models by integrating this information to driving trends on Google Maps. These models were trained on the types of motorcycles that are the most popular in a specific region, according to the business blog.

According to Google, the introduction of environmentally friendly routes in the United States and Canada has resulted in a reduction of carbon emissions equal to that which is saved by 100,000 cars.

By releasing additional features for Google Maps over the course of several years, Google has endeavored to persuade users to switch to modes of transportation that are less harmful to the environment. In 2018, the business began including information on electric vehicle charging stations within the app for the first time. The company began offering features for bike navigation in the month of July. These features include information on the volume of car traffic along the route as well as the different types of roads.
