Gage County MP rescues dog from icy pond

LINCOLN, Nebraska (Nebraska) — A Gage County Sheriff’s Deputy rescued a dog Thursday from an icy pond near Pickrell.

Deputy Thomas Smith was sent to a pond a couple of miles northwest of Pickrell at 5:46 p.m., officials said. The dog fell through the ice and was trapped.

When the deputy arrived, he noticed that the dog, a German Shepherd, was almost submerged and was clinging to the ice edge 15 yards from the shoreline.

The deputy borrowed a set of waders, entered the pond, broke through the ice with a hammer and saved the dog.

After being rescued, the deputy was examined and treated for a cold on the spot before he returned to duty. The dog was returned to the owner.
