Fifth grader wins regional spelling bee in Omaha and moves on to national competition
OMAHA, Nebraska (Nebraska) — Sarah Fernandez has won the 2023 Regional Spelling Contest. This is the 94th year of the competition and it has always been held in Omaha.
With this victory, Sarah gets into the national spelling bee. It was something she knew she wanted to do more than a year ago.
“That was last year when I was in 4th grade. It was in my spelling class, and since then I knew that I really wanted to do this, ”said Sarah.
According to the organizers, 200 children compete at the national level. Sarah was there before and tied for 49th place.
Sarah’s talent is not limited to spelling, she is also an avid pianist and performed at Carnegie Hall.
