AROUND OMAHA

Chris Bowling of The Reader will be at the Dundee Book Company on Saturday 11 February for a public talk. The event will start at 14:00, admission is free, registration is not required. (They say Chris will bring freshly baked buns to the participants.)

A group of citizens speaks with the OPPD to discuss the future of the coal-fired power plant in North Omaha. The group says it wants help from the OPPD to install aerial monitors throughout the area, step up efforts to fund renewable energy projects, and update information to enforce plant closures.

The City of Ralston plans to renovate all seven of its parks. About 40 people attended a public hearing on the city’s parks master plan, which includes upgrading aging playgrounds. The final plan is expected in the next few months.

Friendly Noise Warning: An exercise is being held at Offutt Air Force Base today, February 10, from 12:30 to 15:30. The exercises will take place both at the base and outside it, in the military housing area.

AROUND NEBRASKA

Over the past year, eight women doctors have become powerful players in the fight for abortion rights in Nebraska. The group formed a political action committee and convinced the Nebraska Medical Association to oppose further restrictions on abortion. But it has not always been easy, and will soon become much more difficult.

Legislature: Medical marijuana is back on the table. State Senator Anna Wishart, who has led efforts to legalize it for the past six years, is proposing to legalize it for a specific list of diseases and health conditions. There are two other marijuana-related bills that go further. Wishart says she will try to get another vote if her bill is not passed.

A district court judge has appointed a special prosecutor to review a police investigation into an alleged theft at the Nebraska Republican Party headquarters in Lincoln. Tim Norlinger, former Attorney for Otoe and Jefferson Counties, is a criminal defense attorney in Lincoln.
