Exotic fruit protects against vision loss – “nourishes” the cornea
Taking care of our eyes is vital, especially as we get older. While there are some factors that can affect our vision that are out of our control, there are things we can do to potentially reduce the risk of problems. Diet is one such way to do this.
According to the London Eye Clinic, dragon fruit is an exotic product that can help protect the eyes.
Dragon fruit originates from southern Mexico and other Central American countries including Guatemala, Costa Rica and El Salvador.
Also known as pitaya or strawberry pear, the dragon fruit’s name comes from the appearance of its scaly and prickly rind.
Eye clinic explains the benefits of fruits. It states: “Dragon fruit is rich in vitamins A and C and carotene.

“These vitamins are known to nourish and protect the cornea.
“This fruit has a very unique appearance and has recently become extremely popular due to its many health benefits and nutrients.
“This fruit is good for maintaining both low light and color vision.”
Vitamin A deficiency is the leading preventable cause of childhood blindness in the world.
The American Optometric Association (AOA) considers it an important “eye-friendly” nutrient.
It states: “Vitamin A supports the functioning of the conjunctival membranes and the cornea.”
The NHS also states that vitamin A is essential to “help vision in dim light.”
Other dietary sources of vitamin A include:
- Cheese
- eggs
- oily fish
- Enriched lean spreads
- Milk and yogurt

Similarly, vitamin C is recognized by other sources as important for vision.
“Vitamin C, ascorbic acid, promotes blood vessel health and helps neutralize oxidative damage that can lead to the development of cataracts or the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD),” the AOA says.
According to the NHS, adults need about 40 milligrams of vitamin C per day.
This can be managed with diet alone, though additional supplements can be taken.
Other dietary sources of vitamin C include:
- Citrus fruits such as oranges and orange juice
- pepper
- Strawberry
- Black currant
- Broccoli
- Brussels sprouts
- Potato.
However, the health benefits of dragon fruit go beyond the scope.
One study published in the World Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences states: “Dragon fruit has antioxidant activity. [that] may also prevent inflammatory diseases such as gout and arthritis.
“Pitaya fruit is high in vitamin C, vitamin A, B1, B12, and E. The minerals in dragon fruit include a good dose of potassium, magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus.”
