The World Health Organization (WHO) announced today that it has delivered one billion doses under the Covax program so far.
The WHO warns that this figure should be a milestone and “a reminder of how much remains to be done”, after the accumulation of vaccine stocks in rich countries, according to US media.
The WHO specified that yesterday’s delivery of 1.1 million doses of vaccine to Rwanda included the billionth dose delivered through the Kovacs program.
The WHO statement said that vaccines had been delivered to 144 countries so far under the Kovacs program, “but that is just a reminder of how much more needs to be done.”
The WHO has long criticized the unequal distribution of vaccines and called on both manufacturers and countries to prioritize the Covax program.
