Cookies with Certain Ingredients May Benefit Your Heart and Lower Cholesterol

With over 160,000 deaths each year in the UK alone, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. Health problems, such as high cholesterol, can set the stage for this serious condition, with the trigger often being an unhealthy diet. While many treats, such as cookies and cakes, can be the cause of high cholesterol levels, some of the ingredients found in some cookies may be an exception.

When the daytime slump hits, the usual response is to get up from your computer and make a cup of coffee or tea.

Many people also like to pair this afternoon boost with a little sugary snack.

Although cookies are more like a naughty treat than a healthy meal, Doughlicious founder Katherine Bricken shared that choosing cookies with certain ingredients can provide some hidden benefits.

It’s no secret that fruit is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, but the same properties can be applied to fruit cookies as well.

Bricken explained that blueberries — the main ingredient in the Doughlicious Dough-Chi range — offer the “highest levels of antioxidants” of any fruit.

She said, “So much so that one cup of blueberries also makes up a quarter of the recommended daily allowance for vitamin C, which promotes cardiovascular health.”

Another healthy cookie flavor world-famous for its benefits is Matcha.

Matcha, traditionally consumed in East Asia, is a finely ground powder of specially grown green tea leaves.

What’s more, the green powder can lower cholesterol and blood pressure, two precursors to heart disease.

Another cholesterol-lowering ingredient often found in cookies is oatmeal.

Grains are rich in soluble fiber known as beta-glucan, which is especially important for lowering bad cholesterol levels.

Heart UK explains that when you eat oat fiber, it forms a gel that binds to cholesterol-rich bile acids in the gut, helping to limit the amount of cholesterol absorbed from the gut into the bloodstream.

“Studies show that oats and oatmeal provide many health benefits, including lowering blood sugar levels and lowering the risk of heart disease,” Bricken added.

While these healthy ingredients can improve your heart health, it’s still important to minimize cholesterol-raising saturated fats, such as butter, which is often used in cookies.

Sugar is another tricky ingredient, according to Harvard Medical School, as carbs can raise your risk of heart disease.

One solution might be to bake your own cookies, incorporating a lot of the good ingredients while avoiding the problematic ones.

Aside from their ability to keep your heart healthy, if you choose the right ingredients, cookies can also reduce stress in “minutes.”

Nutritional anthropologist Caroline Hobkinson has observed that nibbling on your favorite food, such as cookies, can increase happiness levels and reduce stress than modern remedies like CBD oil or a cup of tea.

Hobkinson said: “The easily digestible carbohydrates in some of our favorite foods boost L-tryptophan (an essential amino acid, part of which produces serotonin and helps regulate a person’s happiness levels) and improves mood within five to ten minutes. ”

This claim is even supported by research conducted by scientists who found that by changing your diet to include more L-tryptophan, you can create a positive mood change and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
