Commuters may face traffic problems after Dan Ryan, Stevenson Ramp closed due to trash fire

Thousands of commuters using a ramp connecting two major Chicago expressways may see traffic congestion in the next days or weeks.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the ramp connecting the outbound Dan Ryan Expressway (Interstate 90/94) to the outbound Stevenson Expressway (Interstate 55) in Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood was closed Thursday after a trash fire caused “significant damage” to the ramp’s steel beams on Wednesday.

While IDOT said it is investigating the damage to the bridge and determining what repairs are necessary, the agency stated that extreme warping of the steel might lead to a lengthy closure.

IDOT reports that motorists will be need to exit I-55 (inbound), exit onto Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, and re-enter I-55 (outbound) during the detour.

This article will be revised as additional information becomes available.
