Cedar Rapids teenager is appealing a court order to pay $150,000 in restitution to the family of the man she killed after raping her

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – According to court filings, a minor from Iowa is appealing a court decision requiring her to pay $150,000 in compensation to the family of the guy she claims raped and trafficked her.

Pieper Lewis, age 17, is required to pay reparations as part of his sentence for murdering Zachary Brooks.

According to Iowa law, anyone guilty of causing another person’s death is required to pay at least $150,000 to the victim’s estate. However, Lewis’ attorneys believe that the restitution for Brooks’ family is a “illegal sentence.”

They claim that Brooks was identified as the individual responsible for her sexual exploitation through human trafficking. Lewis pled guilty to murdering Brooks in Des Moines two years ago.

Lewis’s GoFundMe effort has now raised almost $561,000.
