Calming mushrooms before bed for deep sleep

Trying to sleep at night can not only make daily activities difficult and frustrating, but also have more serious long-term health consequences. Studies have shown that those who sleep less may be at greater risk for diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. So doing your best to get a good night’s sleep is vital.

One such way to do this is to consume a certain type of mushroom.

According to expert Matt Kelly, founder of Space Goods, reishi mushrooms have “significant” benefits.

Reishi mushrooms, also known as Ganoderma lucidum or lingzhi, are native to East Asia.

While they can be eaten as is, they are not considered particularly tasty and are traditionally served as a powder, usually to be consumed as a drink, and can be bought as a supplement.

Mr. Kelly explained, “Medicinal mushrooms may not be the first thing you think of as a natural sleep aid, but varieties like reishi have been used for thousands of years by natural practitioners as a proven remedy.

“In fact, recent studies have confirmed that medicinal mushrooms have significant immunomodulatory effects that can increase total sleep time, including non-REM sleep or deeper sleep.

“That’s because mushrooms are adaptogens, which means they help your nervous system adapt to stress.

“Adaptogens of various types are used in the all natural medicine tradition to help calm the mind and help the body deal with stress.

“While there are various herbal adaptogens and even sedative and hypnotic herbs, many of them can only be used for a limited time or cannot be combined with other medications, whereas medicinal mushrooms are safe to use along with most medications.”

Mr Kelly’s company Space Goods recently used reishi mushrooms as part of a new sleep aid they are offering.

“Reishi Mushroom, also known as the ‘Calm Mushroom’, is one of the main ingredients in Dream Dust as it has been shown to increase serotonin levels and have an adaptogenic effect on chemical messengers that modulate the immune and central nervous system, especially the stress response. ,” He said.

“Natural compounds have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and sedative properties to help support sleep quality, so taking Reishi regularly can help you achieve feelings of calm and deeper sleep.”

He added: “Anyone who is not allergic to mushrooms can use medicinal mushrooms; however, they can taste bad when taken on their own, which is why we included reishi mushrooms in a great honey and ginger flavored drink.

“These mushrooms are not only beneficial for adults who need sleeping pills, children can take them safely too, they just need products with the appropriate dosage.

“Medicinal mushrooms may also improve concentration and even enhance neurological development beyond their calming effect.”

What does the study say?

A study published in the journal BMC Microbiology in 2021 examined the sleep-inducing properties of reishi or ganoderma mushrooms.

He concluded: “A total of 34 sedative-hypnotic components (including five central active components) corresponding to 51 target genes have been identified.

“Multilevel network interaction analysis and enrichment analysis demonstrated that Ganoderma exerts anti-sleep effects through several central-peripheral mechanisms simultaneously, mainly through the regulation of cellular apoptosis/survival and cytokine expression through major target genes such as TNF, CASP3, JUN and HSP90αA1 ; it also affected immune regulation and apoptosis.

“Therefore, Ganoderma has potential as an adjuvant therapy for complications associated with insomnia.”

In a separate study published in the Pondicherry Journal of Nursing in 2016, insomnia is also listed as a health problem that reishi mushrooms can help, along with depression, anxiety, and chronic fatigue syndrome.
