A 16-year-old boy is charged with complicity in the Lincoln assassination in Fonner Park.
GRAND ISLAND, Nebraska (Cologne) – Police say a 16-year-old boy was involved in Thursday’s murder of 62-year-old Todd Scherer of Lincoln in Fonner Park.
Court records released Friday morning show a 16-year-old boy from Grand Island is charged with robbery and two counts of felony accessory. The police detained the boy on Thursday afternoon.
Logan Hunts Horse, 20, of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, is charged with first-degree murder and two counts of using a deadly weapon to commit a felony.
Both Hunts Horse and the boy were in Hall County Court on Friday morning for initial hearings. The judge set bail for Hunts Horse at $5 million. The teen’s bail was set at $500,000.
Court documents on Friday contained more details about the murder.
Police found Scherer’s body on Thursday morning. He was shot in the stomach and received a large cut on his head. Court documents state that both Hunts Horse and the teen went to Walmart after the shooting. Upon returning from Walmart, they found Scherer still alive. Hunts Horse then hit Scherer in the head with a baseball bat.
Court records show that Scherer’s purse was then removed from his trouser pocket, and then the teenager, Hunts Horse and his girlfriend divided the money in the purse.
“It appears that the victim and the suspects knew each other and this was not a random attack,” said GIPD Captain Dean Elliott.
Grand Island Police and the Grand Island Fire Department called a stable on Stolley Park Road Thursday at 10:00 a.m. on a report of an unconscious man. There they found Scherer dead with an apparent gunshot wound.
Soon after, the police arrested Hunts Horse, finding him asleep in another equipment room in the same shed. Captain Elliot said he was sent to the Hall County Jail for murder. Police recovered a gun believed to be the murder weapon.
